What is denatured alcohol 96% according to TSDA-1?
Denatured Alcohol 96% TSDA-1 (also known as SDA40 or DEB96) is an extra neutral alcohol (alcohol free from impurities) that has been denatured using the TSDA-1 (Trade Specific Denatured Alcohol 1) formula of 95.9% Ethanol, 4% water, 0.1% TBA (Tertiary butyl alcohol, tert-Butanol, 2-Methylpropan-2-ol, Trimethyl carbinol, 2-Methyl-2-propanol) and 10ppm Bitrex (also known by various trade names including denatonium benzoate, Aversion, Denatrol, BITTERANT-b and BITTER+PLUS).
What is TBA?
Tertiary butyl alcohol appears as a colourless, volatile liquid with a dangerous, sweet smell. t-Butyl Alcohol is produced in large quantities. Nearly half of its use is in paints and other coatings because it quickly evaporates into the air and also dissolves many substances.
What is Bitrex?
Denatonium benzoate is the world’s bitterest chemical compound. By contrast, extra neutral alcohol is colourless, odourless and tasteless. Denatonium benzoate is therefore added to denatured alcohol TSDA-1 so that when used in minute quantities in products such as antifreeze, shampoos or nail-biting deterrents, the extremely unpleasant bitter taste prevents the alcohol from being accidentally ingested, for example by a small child. And despite its repulsively bitter taste for humans, if denatonium benzoate is ingested it has no lasting adverse physical effects and poses no danger to a person’s health.
Uses of denatured alcohol TSDA-1
Denatured alcohol TSDA-1 has antimicrobial properties, which means it can destroy bacteria and other germs, making it an important ingredient in disinfectants.
Being a natural preservative, refreshing agent, sun filter and solubiliser of active ingredients, denatured alcohol TSDA-1 is also ideal for use in a wide range of cosmetic products. These include face and skincare products, such as moisturising cream, sun protector and aftershave; hair care products, such as hair colour and hairspray; deodorants; and makeup and other beauty products.
